That is why it is essential that take the following steps to care take of your windshield to make sure you don’t have to get it replaced.
6 Tips To Care For Your Windshield
1) Get It Repaired As Soon As Possible
Don’t wait around to get the rock chip repaired. Half of the Calgary population does it, and before they know it, they’ve got a fully cracked windshield. You should try to get it repaired on the same day, as in most cases, it’s a first-come, first-service basis.
The work itself isn’t that time consuming, so you should be able to fit it into your schedule. Your rock chip repair expert will fill the chip with a special resin that will prevent it from spreading around. It won’t take too much time or is too expensive.
However, if you’re struggling for time, then you should do the following to protect your windshield until you can get it repaired.
2) Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes
What happens if you place your glass cup in hot water then straight away in cold water? It cracks and shatters. The same applies to windshields (but not to such an extreme level).
However, if you apply direct heat to your windshield in cold weather, it might cause the spread of chip. The same applies in the opposite direction: if you apply cold to your windshield in hot weather.
To prevent this from happening, make sure that you keep your car in the shade in the summertime, and do not excessively use the window defroster until you have the chip repaired
3) Tape The Chip To Cover It Up
There is a temporary fix that should help you when it comes to your rock chip.
All you have to do is place a piece of scotch tape – the kind you would use to seal up moving boxes – over the chip from the outside of the window. It will work by keeping dirt and moisture out of the crack, as well as providing a thin layer of protection.
One single piece of tape should be fine to cover the chip. Any more and the tape can be pulled off by the wipers.
Don’t use any other type of tape, such as duct tape or masking tape. It does not have the same effect of keeping out moisture and dirt.
4) Clean And/Or Replace Your Wipers
Every time your wipers rollover your windshield they leave tracks behind. And in most cases, they will leave dirt behind. Over time, the wipers will fill in the chip with dirt, contaminating it and slowly spreading it open. There is a way to stop this from happening.
Use a rag with windshield washer fluid to remove any contaminants from your wipers. Clean and clear wipers will not be as punishing to your windshield if they’re in good condition. However, if your wipers are in poor condition, replace them.
5) The Temperature Changes From Pressure Washing
When it comes to pressure washing your vehicle, the drastic temperature changing from the water inside and outside the water can further spread the chip. Continually doing it will make your chip get larger and larger, so avoid doing it if possible.
6) Take It Easy On The Road
You can’t stop driving if when you got a rock chip. You got things to do and life doesn’t stop. But that doesn’t mean that you should take care on the road. Take it easy on the road and avoid any potholes, gravel or rocky roads, and driving in extreme weather. All these are little things that can expand your chip, resulting in you in needing windshield repair.
